The poem was first published in 1904 in the weekly journal 'Ittehad'. Later it was published in 1924 in the Urdu book Bang-i-Dara. The song was originally written for children in the ghazal style of Urdu poetry. The song was formally known as "Tarānah-e-Hindi", which means “Anthem of the People of Hindustan” in Urdu. First time it was publicly recited at Government College, Lahore, British India, which is now in Pakistan. Muhammad Iqbal was working at the Government College, Lahore during 1904-05, and was invited by Lala Har Dayal (Founder or Gadar Party) to address the students.
